SCC 2010

The SCC 2010 is over and the Sechs Volt crew are very pleased this year. Bigger, better and more spectacular than ever. The Vintage village had a selection of cars this year that really set the standard. We had a Karmann convertible line up counting 22 cars, we had the third oldest Karmann Ghia in the world, we had an original signwritten highroof split, we had a oldspeed lineup like never seen before in Norway, we had WW2 cars swimming and dirtriding in the forest, and we had a lot of visitors with outstanding cars. The level of cars was simply amazing... And yes, we had a well known samba bus driving around the Village after 35 years under water. And if you have not discovered what SCC is all about, be sure to check the photos and feedback on the internet, and make sure to not miss it in 2011.

Dyno testing the Express engine

What do you do when the kids and wife are gone for a few days during the vacation? You dyno the engine!
I see lots of guys talking about hp after dyno testing. After doing it myself I realised that the calculation of hp is not constant. When testing yesterday the guy had to put in some numbers in advance about how many horses you "loose" in the gearbox. He told me that you loose different amount of hp in different kind gearboxes, so it will not be accurate. My Express engine with 1,2mm flycut heads and dual 28 pci's with 95" main jets and 180" air jets, dynoed 27 hk on the wheels. As I was told, the actual amout of horses is between 33-36. Just perfect if you want to drive in steady 90 km/h, even uphill :-)

How to build a "beetlebomb"

Once upon a time...in 1960....what we consider "Old speed" was "the latest hop-up kit". 

 And few old speed hop-up kits are more sought after than the Denzel kit for the 30 hp (US 36hp) vw 1200 engine...

Imported to the US by European Motor Products Inc. and built by Revmaster Inc, both in California, the Denzel kit (heads, rocker arms, lifters, carbs and engine tin) should jump horsepower from 36 to a healthy 54...for the power-thirsty, an EMPI 69,5 mm crank would rise displacement to 1300ccm and the stroked engine to a whopping 60hp.. 

Throw in a longer duration camshaft, bigger carbs and even higher compression, and 85 horsepower was reportedly possible....!

One can only wonder what influence Denzel tuning kits would have had on the vw tuning industry if Wolfgang Denzel had not started to work for BMW shortly thereafter......?

Sechsy summer nights

Last night as we were cleaning in our garage after a winters work, this split bus suddenly stopped outside. We jumped in and headed straight to the nearest beach. The rest is history as they say... We wish you all happy holidays, and hope see you @ SCC in August!!

After a heavy breakfast by Oval57`s mum we headed for BugRun 2010. All the tree cars did run like a blast on the highway. At BugRun the swapmeet never turn you down - we did all get some nice parts for the cars - or the shelf. Two of the cars in front was first time Mantorp. We are sorry for the high voltage car in the middle....

"No guts - No story" is this years slogan for the SCC event in august. And one of the guys that makes storys to tell is Claude and his beautiful BUGBUS.NET van. This summer he and a couple of friends set off from Switzerland in their vintage VW's heading for Norway on holiday. Reaching Oslo, Claude desided to take the "little" detour to Bug Run i Sweden, were we met up with him. We had a great weekend, and I believe Claude made the detour worth while, as he scored some parts for his Barndoor project. Rumors has it he has travelled more than 100 000 kilometers in his bus since restoration - Thats guts right there!

The bugbus unfornately suffered some generator trouble on the way back from Bug Run, but that's being fixed at a shop in Oslo as we speak. We wish the swiss guys a nice holiday in their vintage buses, as they are heading further north before returning back home to Switzerland. Some guys have all the fun =)

BUG RUN 2010!!! =)

Just two more days to go....BUGRUN 2010 is approaching...and the sechs volt crew will of course be there!

Some of us went there several times during the 90'ies - as for myself, I took up the annual pilgrim travel again in 2002. Back then, a '63 recently dragged out of a shed was purchased, washed, MOT'd and off she went. 

"The Norwegian Bend" - BRMs were the wheels of choice on all these cal-lookers.. =)

One of the huge crowd-pleasers in 2002 was this swedish "rat-rod-vw". We are looking forward to see what's up for this year...and of course the swap-meets as well.... ;-)

Flaaklypa Grand Prix

The 19. annual vintage race "Flaaklypa Grand Prix" took place last weekend. Named after the famous movie, around 340 vintage cars and bikes "raced" through the beautiful mountain scenery of Lom, Skjaak and of course Flaaklypa. A lot of nice rides and vintage tin were spotted, among these this outlaw 356 C was one of my favorites...a nice switter was also present =)

This is so great... I've been waiting for these pictures for some time now, and finally -they arrived today.

After help form BRM (thanks alot!!!!) i finally came in contact with the former owner witch is over eighty years old now. He drove the car back in the early sixties and has lots of great stories to tell. So far he has only been able to make some very bad photocopies of the originals taken in 1963. Better copies must be made, even if I have to drive down and get them myself

Express Autotechnik KG

A guy named Herman Knust made a cool carb setup for VWs back in the days. In 2003 i discovered an incomplete set and started collecting parts. The incomplete kit came from USA, some was mas made in Denmark, others bought from Sweeden and some small parts even came from France. Last summer I finally had the opportunity to drive it - what a rush!. Here is some pictures of the parts I started with and some other cars that gave me inspiration along the road. Ivansson Barndoor

Many scandinavian VW nuts have visited the "Ivanssons bilskrotning" over the years. More and more pieces of history has left the site, and there is often talk about the cars that once stood there "back then". One of the most talked about in recent years is this barndoor in the picture. Quite fun to see that this one ended up as everything but carpenter nails =) Now rolling on it's own wheels, and not far from being roadworthy again! Maiden aircooled journey - spring 2010

Knechten didn't exactly had a hard time in getting his race-switter up and running and out of the barn the other day....the Abarth beast fired on all four right up, and drove out in the sunshine =)

All revved up and no place to go....good thing BugRun 2010 isn't far away! =)

Mind the nursing bag, will you?

Some say the six volt batteries are no good for starting your ride. And this spring the besserwissers may be right. Never have the Sechs Volt been harder to start as the summer is creeping in. Everyone seems to be caught up in messy diapers and lunk warm milk bottles. Not sure which way this is going with the Sechs Volt, as all the rides are still indoors and covered with dust. As our reputation wasn’t worn out enough already?? Why not post up a picture to drool over then, as everyone has their sleeves covered with sour milk instead of oil anyway. Next year rubber hats will be mandatory in our garage… To everyone else, have a pleasant time making the first trip of the year =)

Pauls stunning 1950 Porsche

Some cars is better than you belive. This unbelivable superold Porsche is owned and restored by a norwegian guy living in Oslo. His name is Paul Rui and is well known into restaurations and perfection of old classic cars. You may know his supercool split featured in some hot VW-magazines, and in BC 2 years ago?

Svalbard - the "defroster" without electric

It starts to get warmer here in Norway, but it is still winter and ice. This little option from the good old days shows us one nice idea for defrosting. This is made in Norway and the name is from the well know Island up north belonging to Norway. Its NOS in the box, and maybe its best that way? When it was new it schould glue to the window. Anyone seen this in use before? It lays on Oval57`s shelf. It is not so much activity in the garage this days, but some of us are working in the basement, and I know that SplitBoy have some seriously progress on his O`so cool split.

Three rear-engined cars

In their March '54 issue, Popular Mechanics compared three rear-engined cars. Thou shall not dwell on the one on the top....

"The volkswagen-peoples car - is not cheaper than it counterparts, so it can not be the price which has given this car its popularity. In the new model (1954) the factory has corrected all the faults and deficiencies that earlier models had to struggle with....
...the car now also has syncromesh on 3 of the 4 gears...4th. gear is an "overdrive", and not suitable for driving in the city.."

"The Porsche is appointed by its owner to be the best car built to this date.... ..Both engine and body seems to be built like a high-class clock.... ....a lack of luggage space for a as luxurious as this.....for elderly owners, it can be laborious to enter and exit the car..."

 

Even though I might get both arthritis and lumbago when I get old....I think I would try very my best to cope if a '54 Porsche was my ride... =)

Denmark is a great country:-)

Last friday a big package arrived on my doorstep. First I mistook it for being some boring new kitchen spotlights I´ve been waiting for, but I was soon to be proved wrong. Inside I found a NOS aluminium frame for the convertible project. I first bought a frame i HO 2009 that turned out to be a zwitter convertible frame, but this time I finally got my hands on the correct and missing frame. Now the set of four is complete:-) Searching finally payed off thanks to Peter Plade and XX in Denmark.

Sechs volt mug - serving black(smith) coffee

The happy guys at Norwegian Hammerworks enjoy their coffee with style. Given the happy faces, it's not impossible they got hold of our "Moonshine edition" mugs. Either way, the light of the moon dosen't seem to interfere with their excellent work. We wish Thomas and Gunnar the best of luck on the split(zwitter?) project... It's not listed as work going on in the shop (according to the web site), so we guess this is top secret =)

Mr. Bluehat and his Sechs volt DD-cup

Peter Plade from Denmark is one of our true vintagefriends. Last summer he took his supercool oval all the way from Silkeborg in Denmark heading for Vintage village and SCC. His oval is world-wide-known and always pictured. We did also meet in H-O last summer, and then he got his Sechs volt-mug. Peter is always searching for THAT accessory, the little rare one that will lift his car above all the others. He is also very helpful to his Sechs volt-friends in Norway and get us some nice stuff from time to time. Last fall I did meet Peter and Jens in Silkeborg and we had a great time by one crazy collector of Volkswagens. Many thanks for the picture.

The 12 Volts finally got an alternative

12 volt Volkswagens does have a crowd of enthusiasts, even so in Norway. We struggle to imagine what gives them energy to go on, other than modern electricity. The guys who more than triple the horsepower in their engines has a obvious reason for choosing 12 V electricity in their cars. But now we are talking about original car enthusiasts, that claim to be "12 volt og stolt", translated to "12 volts and proud of it". Luckily for us low-voltage nuts, one of the main caracters on the 12 Volt barriere has opened a own blog. We hope to find out more of the 12 volt mystery here in the future.
