The rarest of the rare??

Sniffing around the greatest VW market in the world like a horny foxhound, can wear out the strongest among us. Never would we believe that the king of swapmeets could run out of batteries. But the combination of marathon searching and the satisfaction of scoring big, put mr. "dubbel-ribbed" in coma when we drove off from BC. It's never far between top and bottom...

Bad Camberg 07

Finally the day came and we could head for the famous German VW Meeting. We went for a little "luxury" this time and travelled by plane and slept in a nice hotel. The market was as good as expected, and the prices of course higher than anyone could dream about. Just the way we like it =) Some nice parts found their way home to Norway, though some of us had a struggle getting them through security at the airport.... All in all a perfect weekend for VW nuts like us. We will try to post some pictures of our highlights of the weekend. We will be back!!

Savannah 65

Not finnished packing out from Bug Run, the outlavws jumps into another project, just hours before taking off to Bad Camberg. After a ad on vw2you, Splitboy and Knechten went to collect a 1965, former Norwegian "looker". The car has a somehow interesting story, as it was one of the early "old school" lookers on the norwegian scene. The car was bought with the intensions of parting it up, to give fresh parts for a 50 and 52 split. Amazingly the car fired right up, and we drove it all the way "home". The car actually ran so good, we have second thoughts on the slaughtering process..... First thing was getting rid of the bumpers, and with a set of correct wheels, this car would look good instantly... More to come...

Better next year???

The Norwegian VW-society had this year gathered for a joined camping during Bug Run 07.

This worked out well, but somehow a swedish bay window bus packed with fourteeners manage to squeeze in among the norwegians. This was not popular, and playing music all night at a desibel level that no one could talk to each other, made for some physical action. The bay window bus with FJZ*** plates a hereby BANNED by the 6V Outlavws. Next year it may be family-camping at Mantorp for us. We like the VW part of BUG RUN, not the rave-party side... Too bad it's turning in this direction...

PS! We are NOT against drinking beer and playing music, just done within reason...

The boys are back in town.... After a very hot, very nice weekend in Sweden. This time with no problems to the cars what so ever =) a short summary of a perfect weekend could be something like this; good weather, having a few beers, selling parts in front of the tent, talking VW with strangers, finding good and rare parts at the market, seeing naked Finns, no sleeping in a overheated tent, seeing that all the "special" cars had finnish or danish plates this year as well, sitting 15-20 hours in a vintage VW, driving "Outlavw" on the speedtrack at night.....

There is always a reason

And the clutch problem was not so very complicated after all. The sixvolt crew had a smack in the face once again, trusting the ancient 6 volt system on their beetles. Using a 6 volt flywheel on a "new" engine with o-ring seal on the crank, is not always success. In this case oil had squeezed in between the iside of the flywheel and onto the clutchdisc. resulting in a slipping and overheated clutch. The disc shown in the picture could easily be picked apart with the fingers. The pressure plate was all gone and could be squeezed togheter by man force... That was not right. Everything was cleaned up, and sealer was added to the flywheel and nut, and a fresh clutch disc and a "new" pressureplate were put in place. Engine was installed once again, and the acclerator pump on the carburator cleaned... AGAIN (some idiot used liquid sealer instead of gaskets on the carburator at some point) The result; two lovely skidmarks out of the garage and on to the gravel.... What a differense =)

Old trick

If this is a well used trick from back in the days is hard to say. But certainly they had some problems with the 180 mm 6v clutch back then as well. To stand the spanking from the Kvikk engine, the clutch has to be improved in some way. Monday the old trick found in grandads toolbox going to be tested in the outlavw mansion. Hopefully we can report long skidmarks in the gravel =)

Hungry for gravel

This period styled rallye car is starting to look like it used to be driven this way. It is certainly coming together now and the premiere run to Mantorp should be possible. So we thought.... After some local dragracing against the 356 engined Jungle green Oval, the clutch started slipping big-time. It seem to be no other way to sort this out, than to rip the engine out of the car again.

The engine making trouble for the clutch is a engine built by Kvikk Service in Norway, and is based on a singelport 1300 F engine. The only visible proof that the engine is modified are a 8 doweld crank, and some ported heads. The compression also seem to be higher than standard. A 30 PICT carburator with more flow throught it than standard, combined with a displacement of approx. 1750 ccm, makes the whole thing exiting. The package looks pure stock, but after testing against the 356 engine, the power output should be somwhere between 70-80 horsepower at least. The final results to compare will be easier with a functional clutch.

It is one week to Mantorp, and monday evening is reserved for clutch trobleshooting.... the best of luck Fürsten.

No one can argue that the look of the 53 oval in rallye clothing, and the angry retro-engine is a great combo... Pure driving joy =)

Just look at this picture? When we bougth a new "foodprocessor" in the kitchen, my grandmothers old went out. I did throw everyting except for the aluminium top. I think it did look like something else.......

It may look like the Outlavws garage has closed down these days, but that is not the case. The spring-horny guys are too involved in their projects to update the blog. This weekend a couple of the projects saw the first sunrays this year. One of the projects is nearly complete, but the little bastard out back is not willing to play along so far. Turning the the monster with only 6 volt at hand, can seem to be a setback for the Outlavws. We hope for more details....

Little bastard

Knechten and Fürsten bought this piece of norwegian VW-history last year. They didn't know much about it then, but 
yesterday they finally got some hours free too find out. 
8 dowelled flywheel was found behind the clutch, and after
it had swallowed some gas it was brought back to life again.
I can asure you -it was teardropping to hear a flat four after
a long winter of welding

The black survivor

This car is rarely seen among photos at this blog.
What you are looking at is an unrestored bug from the good year 1953. 
Many great trips have been done in behind the steeringwheel 
of this car.
Nedless to say, things didn't get any worse after placing the
OG batwing hornring and the OG schenk ashtray inside it. 
"Smoke while you shift gears" 
- and they say a man can't do two things at the same time??

Lazy or hard working guys?

Last summer after digging out a double door bus from the Norwegian woods, two of the members in 6V Outlavws found the backseat in Knechtens car very comfy on the way back home. It was hard work and the bus didn't exactly work with us, so sleeping was a must after this bus-wrestling round. Good night boys, and sleep tight.

By the way: Take a good look at the the first picture, maybe you can see the bus on the trailer.

These running boards are killing me

Some parts are almost always missing on vintage Volkswagens. I believe the OG running boards with the reinforcement made for splits and early ovals fits  nicely into this category. It took me lots of research to find out what they should look like and what material to use. Parts was bought from both Sweeden and US and then they came together after a while . Finally I when I was stupid enough to believe that every piece of these beauties had found its right place in vw-history, new evidence turned up proving that my rubberchoice was all wrong. Great! 

The ambassador

Her is one "barnfresh" pic of my july 1950 model. Splitboy and Oval57 got one day off work and gave old VW all our attention. The 34 hp engine got out and throwed behind the barn. Crap! The split is rusty, but I think it can be worth saving as a original patina-car. All fenders are original, as well as the bonnet and engine-decklid.

Original suitcase-set

Oval57 always look for new items and gadgets for his collection. But the best for him is option wich can be used with his highly beloved oval.

This "Polaris" set with suitcases comes from ca. 1958 and has been in the same family until now. The same weekend I also got one more "Stabburboks" picnicbox from Stabburet with a split VW on two sides.

In the dark winter nights

At this time of year the summer season is almost forgotten. To refresh the good memories from the 2006 season, I found some pictures to "share the moment". This was the first official club stand the 6V Outlavws put together, just hours before we headed for Mantorp Park. A few of the outlavws good friends are also shown in the pictures.... Next time (2008?) there may be four split window beetles parked in front of our tent...

Split-kit-boy

Not everyone can see the happiness of owning a trailer full of metal pieces. Split Boy says it's the best thing he ever bought. Well, looking trough "beer-glasses" can fool the best of us. But against all odds, put toghether according to the factory manual from Wolfsburg, the pile of metalpanels is starting to look like a car. It can't be said enough, but this car is going to be a sick ride... Nothing beats an aged bordeaux =)

Progression all over

The garage "crew" is really getting warm, and the cars progression is visible everywhere you look. Fursten welded in his outer channel, after quite a heavy straightening job on the door sill.

He is also very happy with our newest tool, a mini-grinder. It may look as he has cut out all his teeth with this tool in the picture, but luckily that is not the case.... Did he mention something about buying a newer and rust free car next time??

Zwitter milestone

A personal milestone for Knechten was reached last night. One corner of the car is now welded rock solid. More details on the Zwitter Blog.... 1/4 of the welding job is done =)

Outlavw times

Some of the Outlavws are a little addicted to the spirit and looks of a 70ies Cal-look beetle. We often dream about how it was to live back then and cruise around in a true Cal-looker. Little did we know about how people REALLY drove around in their beetles in the mid 70ies. Here are two links to Youtube showing some "outlavws" action starring a couple of VWs as well. Fürst-Parts

When Fürsten is involved in something related to VW (and that happens from time to time), the level of details are often unlimited. So when the old capitan split needed new outer heaterchannel replacement, no shortcuts was considered. The result shown in the picture is very good, and as close to original as possible for the eye to see. Concidering the amount of hours spent on one piece of replacement channel, I think Wolfparts and others don't have to worry about competition for some time yet. But it's all in the details =) When Fürsten is happy, everyone else are happy...

All for one

Last night in the garage saw splitboy's bug being worked on by all the members present. Starting with most of the panels up front butchered out - the body had started to look like a bug again when we left the barn in the early morning hours. This would not have been possible to do alone... =)

This night, we also made the welder work properly for the first time - with the gas bottle attached to the welder - this started to be real fun!

Taking it a step further

After a day of welding lessons, the skills were tested on real Wolfsburg material. Seeing the result of this fender welded, Splitboy (new nick name) has a fair chance of bringing the gorgeous boureaux back to life. Receiving a hard package from Wolfparts today, we will see some real progression in the Outlavws garage the next weeks =)

Back to basics

We are not all born world champions, and allthough the Outlavws boys are hard as nails, they seem to have a hint of common sense now and then. This time a golden opportunity to learn the basics about MIG welding with a real and very exsperienced teacher, was too good to turn down. We all had a blast during a full day under the supervision of Sr Solberg. As we all know, it always pays off to be the teachers son, and this time was no exception when it came to the welding exams. Someone had taken private lessons and kept his mouth shut...

Happiness

Luckily we discovered that anger can cure anger. In this case the anger someone exspressed through his Mig welder years ago, was possible to cure with heavy hammering many years later.
The best psycological theraphy for both?? A so called win win situation?? Anyway, we left the garage smiling last night =)

Back on track

After being visited through the autumn and winter by lots of "know how" friends, the poor split wagon has got the death penalty more than once. Fürsten had one too many nightmares after each visit in the garage, and evrything from Hebmuller replicas to placing the car behind the barn has been considered. To prove that this is just a big misunderstanding, Knechten and Fürsten undusted their ultimate tools last night; "Stor vinkelsliper" and "Slegge". To everybodys surprise, this was all the medicine needed to bring the split back to life.
Nothing can compares to the feeling of letting all your anger out on a vintage Volkswagen...

New territory

Last night some of the Original-jugend started working on something they never seen before. Take a close look at the manifolds and you see that these guys are way off base trying to figure out modern VW technology. Having only exsperienced changing oil on a 25 hp engine before, the 1600 DP engine seemed to scare them a little bit. But after stripping down the tinware, and fitting the engine with 25 hp fanhousing and generator, the boys looked more relaxed. More pictures to come of this "wolf in sheep-clothing" engine build.
